This weekend, I traveled up to Redding to attend a dinner event for a non-profit in which I serve as a board director. The drive was pleasant enough - light traffic and great weather.
As I arrived in Redding with some time to spare, I stopped to visit the Sundial Bridge. This bridge crosses the Sacramento River at Turtle Bay (near the intersection of Interstate 5 and highway 44). Constructed in 2004, the white steel structure, green glass walkway and suspension cables provide a gleaming path over the river. The Sundial Bridge is free-standing, meaning that there are no bridge support structural footings in the Sacramento River. The bridge was designed by Santiago Calatrava, from Zurich.
On both sides of the river are pathways and picnic areas. On this particular Saturday afternoon, there were many pedestrians and bicyclists enjoying the warm fall day. The evening was dramatically cooler - about 30 degrees.
