Fifteen Hours of Flying over 29 Hours of Travel

Nothing like starting a trip in the early morning - though this was a bit too early even for me.  With a 7am flight from San Francisco to Rome via layovers in New York and London, we needed to start our travel a little after 2am. This provided enough time for the 90 minute drive to the airport while avoiding commute traffic, turning in the rental car, taking the shuttle to the terminal, checking-in at the American terminal, passing through the TSA inspection point and reaching the American business lounge. Luckily, we should catch some shut-eye during the flights as we cashed in frequent flier miles for first class domestic travel and business class international travel for the three of us on this trip.

The roads were clear during the early morning drive to San Francisco. That said, we did pass a multi-vehicle accident on the drive that must have happened perhaps 10 minutes earlier. The emergency responders were present but traffic was still too light to be affected.

With four hours for each layover, we've got a long travel day.
