A Day at the Ball Park, 2015

Every year or so, my younger daughter and I try to attend a SF Giants game at AT&T Park, in downtown San Francisco. We generally make it a weekend activity, with dinner following an afternoon game and a one-night stay at a downtown hotel before driving back home.

This past weekend, we watched the Giants play the Cardinals. I anticipated a good game as the Cards were leading the Central Division of the National League and the Giants were in second place within the West Division of the National League. Our seats were between home and third base, in field club section 122. This seating area was a great location to watch a game.

Lance Lynn of the Cardinals pitched a great game, beating the Giants 6-0, his first career win over the Giants. Unfortunately, he injured his right ankle in the eighth inning and had to leave the game. While I rooted for the Giants, great pitching and fieldwork is terrific to watch and enjoy. Ryan Vogelsong, the Giants pitcher, seemed to struggle on this day and left the game after five innings.

Much of the action, on the Cards' part, took place in the fifth inning. A triple, three singles and a walk pretty much sealed the 6-0 game for St.Louis.

We enjoyed seeing Kelby Tomlinson play second base for the Giants. Kelby came up from the Sacramento River Cats just a week ago.  His first home run was a grand slam and he is currently hitting .328, with 13 RBIs since reaching "The Show." Pretty impressive stats. We should hear great things about Tomlinson's baseball career.

Despite the Giants' loss, we enjoyed an after-game dinner at the Daily Grill, at Union Square, and a restful evening at the Palace Hotel before heading home. If you enjoy a quiet hotel room, the Palace rooms facing the interior court are best.
