Starting A Polar Adventure - 2017

Departing our temporary residence, we're off on another polar adventure. Leaving through Atlanta, we fly to Santiago, Chile, and continue to Buenos Aires, Argentina. After an overnight stay in Buenos AIres, we continue our adventure with a flight to Trelew, on the east coast of Argentina, with an ultimate destination of Puerto Madryn, Argentina. Puerto Madryn is located on the coast of northern Patagonia and is known for its sandy beaches and whale breeding location. Across from Puerto Madryn is the rocky Valdes Peninsula, home to penguins and elephant seals.

We have a few days in Puerto Madryn to catch our breath from long distance air travel and adjust to a new time zone. We will depart Puerto Madryn aboard the Sea Spirit, a 100 passenger expedition ship, for a couple of weeks. We'll make our way to the Falkland Islands for a few days and then on to South Georgia Island. We will return to the mainland via the port at Ushuaia.

South Georgia Island is the largest island in the chain of Sandwich Islands. There are no permanent residents on the Sandwich Islands. South Georgia is used primarily for research bases but was used for whaling and sealing stations until the 1960s. Argentina at one time claimed sovereignty over the Sandwich Islands, which led to the Falklands War, between the United Kingdom and Argentina in the 1980s.

Many readers may be familiar with the expeditions of Ernest Shackleton, Shackleton led three expeditions in this area. The most known and written about expedition of the three was his journey on the Endeavour. Survival of the Endeavour crew was a story of humans overcoming a harsh environment and overwhelming hardship.Shackleton is buried in Grytviken, South Georgia.

Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world. It is located on the Beagle Channel, at the southern tip of Tierra del Fuego Island, with views of the Martial Mounts. Once disembarked from the Sea Spirit, we'll stay at a mountain resort in the Reserva Natural Cerro Alarken. This 250 acre nature preserve contains flora and fauna reflective of Terra del Fuego.

At the conclusion of our Ushuaia visit, we'll start a long set of air flights that will return us back to the United States.
