Travel was put on the back burner over the past six weeks as we've been focused on moving into our new house. After receiving the keys to the house in late December, we spent about a month preparing for the actual move. This included working with AT&T to get fiber pulled to the house (it seems AT&T forgot to complete this task during construction), adding Internet and satellite TV services to the house, installing a 7.1 surround sound system, starting utility services and arranging minor construction repairs that we identified before actually moving into the house.
At the end of January, we finally scheduled the movers to transfer our household items from warehouse storage to the new house. While we've moved several times over the past 35 years, downsizing seemed to present the most challenging move. Even though we pared our household furniture and belongings down, we still found boxes and bags of possessions that really wouldn't be used and with storage, being at a premium, these items had to be given away. A week after the move, we have furniture placed (at least for now) and all items are put away in some fashion - though the spare closets are filled with boxes for which the contents remain to be reviewed for keeping.
With our move complete, we have an upcoming family trip to Hawaii. Although the trip is only for a
week, we'll have time to stop in Kauai and the Big Island. We're looking forward to the island visit as it is the first trip in many years that our adult daughters are able to leave work and accompany us. During this trip, we will visit family friends on Kauai. While there, we've been invited to attend a garden luau dinner at Smith's Tropical Paradise, in Kapaa.
While on the Big Island, we're staying at the Hapuna Beach Resort Hotel. This resort hotel was recently updated and is now a Westin Hotel affiliate. My sister's family will join us on the Big Island for a few days.
My parents had stayed at the Hapuna Beach Resort Hotel many times in the past and looked forward to annual hugs and updates with long-time staff members. My sister and I were able to accompany them on their Big Island visit for their last two trips to Hawaii before health issues prevented them from further travel. So this trip will refresh some personal travel memories and permit us to place my father's ashes in the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery. The Kailua Kona area was one of my father's favorite island locations.
