Upper Egypt and Karnak Temple - February 2022

As we approached the last few days of our Nile River stops, we visited Karnak Temple complex, included on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Karnak is located north of Luxor.

This expansive site was constructed starting 2000-1700 BC with additions up to 305-30 BC. It is believed that 30 pharaohs contributed to the development of Karnak. This  resulted in its large size and different styles of temples and monuments and cultural focus. The area around Karnak was considered a significant worship center of ancient Thebes.

Karnak is considered the second most visited historical site in Egypt, only the Great Pyramid Complex in Giza receives more visitors.  Some of the areas within Karnak are closed for public viewing and subject to restoration efforts.

Scarab statue. Good luck to those that circle
the scarab three times. Marriage comes to those that circle
the statue seven times.
