We're starting to get ready for a five day visit to Rome and, afterwards, embark on a ten day cruise. The cruise will provide one day visits to Naples and Sicily and then focus on several Greek Island port calls.
While in Rome, we are staying in an apartment near the Spanish Steps. Using an apartment rather than a hotel is a great way to get a flavor of city living. Moreover, the apartment has much more space, including a living room, dining room, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen and washer/dryer. We've done similar apartment stays in London and Paris. We often visit local shops and markets so that we can prepare our breakfasts and a few dinners.
One issue with a late summer trip to Italy will be the heat. This time, I'm bringing along a more ventilated Tilley hat (LTM8). The LTM8 has a mesh top for increased air flow. Interestingly, the mesh provides some water repellence and UV protection. As with all Tilley hats, it should travel well as it can be easily rolled/packed and will spring back to the original shape without damage.
I'll be using this hat on a hiking trip to Lassen Volcanic National Park in a few weeks. I'll evaluate the hat while fishing and hiking in the park. A report will be included in my next travel post.
