Minhla and Tha Yet Myo
Our stops in this area focused on visiting cultural and historical sites. In Minhla, there is a fort that was built by King Mindon's brother, Prince Kanaung, with Italian engineering assistance. Completed in 1861, the fort is located on the western banks of the Ayeyarwaddy River to protect Burma from attack by British military forces. Apparently, it was thought that a significant attack would come from primarily from British naval forces. However, the British ultimately took the fort from the land side.
While at Minhla, we also stopped by a colorful town market. Many fruits, vegetables, meats and household items were being offered for sale.

Tha Yet Myo, Myanmar
In Tha Yet Myo resides one of the oldest Post Offices in Myanmar, Initially, the building likely served as a telegraph office in the 1880s - during the days of the monarchy. Our visit to the Post Office provided the perfect opportunity to purchase stamps and mail a few post cards that were piling up in our cabin.
Afterwards, we stopped by a colonial golf course that was established by the British in 1887. The cruise managers arranged for the golfers (and non-golfers) to tee off one of the holes and test the putting greens. It was a pretty relaxed golf course setting, with local cattle grazing on the tenth fairway.
