Yet another summer is ending. We decided to spend the week before Labor Day up at Lake Tahoe's North Shore. Using the same Tahoe City cabin we rent during the winter as our homebase, we were a block from North Lake Boulevard, in downtown Tahoe City. It's great to be able to leave our car in the garage and walk to the lake, shops, dining and grocery stores. This convenience can be particularly handy if you're visiting Tahoe City over a busy weekend.
While most of our time was unplanned, we did get a few walks in during the week. One day, my adult younger daughter and I hiked over to Eagle Falls and Eagle Lake. This is a short hike that brings you just into the boundaries of Desolation Valley. We started our hike shortly after 9am and we shared the trail with hardly any other hikers. However on our return to the car, the trail became more crowded with many couples and families just starting their late morning hike. Confirming the need to start this hike early, we noticed that as we were leaving, trailhead parking became very scarce for incoming hikers.

On another day, my wife and I walked along the Truckee River biking and walking trail. This trail was converted from a former train route that ran between Truckee and Tahoe City from 1900 to 1943. You can almost picture past travelers changing trains in Truckee, arriving in Tahoe City and then moving by boat to their ultimate Tahoe destination. Construction of State Route 89, covering this same route, reduced the need for this short rail line. While easy walking terrain, the view of Truckee River was relaxing and beautiful. At this time of year, the river levels were low and seemed to be waiting for winter to start.

For our third hike, we joined friends to walk up to the former California fire lookout near Stateline. This area provides expansive views of the north shore of Lake Tahoe. Starting in Nevada, the short hike is over a now paved fire road that ends in California. The fire lookout was removed in 2002 and in its place is a scenic viewing area (and bathrooms) at the 7,000 feet elevation level.
