Over the past few days, we've been in New York. While we wanted to watch a couple of shows during the visit, we also included enough spare time to see some of the city sights.
Our home base for the NYC trip was the Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel, on Times Square. It was a convenient location for subway access and particularly for attending evening shows. Our 41st floor room was isolated from the street noise and the floorspace large for a New York hotel room. I recall a NY hotel room several years ago that we stayed in that was not much larger than the bed. Reviews in Tripadvisor (www.tripadvisor.com) are positive for this hotel.
We decided to visit the Ellis Island museum while we were in NY. Arriving at the ferry for accessing Liberty Island and Ellis Island around 9:45am, we faced an almost 90 minute line. We should have purchased reserve tickets via the Internet (www.statueoflibertytickets.com) which would have reduced the wait time but we weren't quite organized enough. Nonetheless, with clear skies the ride to the island was a great way to view the city. The visit to the museum at Ellis Island was worth the wait. Wandering through the Ellis Island exhibits, it was difficult to imagine the degree of confusion and worry about the process, failure to pass the various questions and tests and moving to a new land that each hopeful immigrant experienced.
During the evening we walked over to the Eugene O'Neill Theater and watched the "Book of Mormon." It was a hilarious show and well worth the ticket price.
We played typical tourist for most of the New York trip. Riding on the hop-on/hop-off bus, visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Rockefeller Center, watching "Once" and taking a historical walking tour of Brooklyn (http://www.walknyc.com).
On our last morning, we took the subway from the Rockefeller Center to the American Museum of Natural History. We planned to arrive at the 10am opening for a short visit before our 1pm limo ride to JFK. If you're planning a similar visit, we noticed that the admission line already had a line at 9:50am. So, arriving a bit earlier - say 9:40 - would avoid a 10-15 minute line to pay your admission fee. We also noted that the lower level subway admission line was considerably shorter than the admission line at the main entry.
One dinner recommendation in the Theater district is Trattoria Trecolori. We enjoyed a dinner of antipasto, gnocchi in a red sauce and chicken piccata. With two glasses of wine and tip, the dinner ran a bit less than $100.
